Suggest 50% market rent and their share of daily shopping and bills.

depends on how much you want them OUT

Re: Taking off the kids
I don't think I'd charge mine anything, unless I really needed the money (or as lowermarshhammer has suggested I wanted them out).

They're young, let them enjoy their life as much as they can before they have to worry about bills etc.

Re: Taking off the kids
I would take 10% off them a month, but store it away for them in a bank account. Then when they look to move out, you give them the money back to use as deposit / rent etc

I disagree. You need to teach them to be adults.

you've got to get them used to paying their own way... I had a massive shock when I left home

Going on holidays or travelling as much as they can at that age will teach them much more about life than paying rent would.

Re: Taking off the kids
It's probably worth taking something just out of principle.

My aunt is way too soft on my cousins and despite being late 20s/early 30s and both working- one has bought himself a BMW- they both utterly leech off her, live in her house for free and don't contribute. One has moved his girlfriend and her kid in too. She doesn't have a lot in the way of money either, but she's way too generous.

Like already said on here - you have to teach them the value of money and exactly how much certain things really cost for the day they do leave - if you really don't need the money stick it into an account (without them knowing) so when they do leave it will help them out big time for either deposit or stuff they will need.

Re: Taking off the kids
I don't see how getting them to pay as little as 10% of their earnings to line your own pocket would teach them anything.

They'd already be paying bills like their phone bill.

Teaching them to actually save their money for holidays/clothes/new laptops or TV's would teach them a whole lot more I would have thought?

Back in the old days it was a third for keep , third in the bank and a third to piss up the wall.

How about using the child maintenance calculator, call it housekeep maintainence.

Re: Taking off the kids
The question should be “how much should they contribute towards the cost of living under your roof”.

I think that it is essential that they are aware of the cost and as such hand a regular sum over. What you do with it, such as saving it up for them etc, is down to you.

Re: Taking off the kids
I take £250 a month off my son each month but put it into a separate bank account that hes not aware of and will give it all back to him when he wants to buy his own place to use as a deposit.

As someone said ealier,a lot depends on how much they actually earn.

Re: Taking off the kids
I have a flat that I let the eldest two share. Charge them just enough to cover the mortgage. They've got it good!

If they were living at home I'd charge circa £200-300 depending on what they were earning.

Re: Taking off the kids
Always take money off them, even if you set it aside.

My Mum and Dad never charged, and it was a massive shock when i had to start paying bills.

Suggest 50% market rent and their share of daily shopping and bills.

thereby leavig them no room to save up to move out themselves
